Great Resumes Fast » Resume Writing Tips » Dispelling Resume Myths—Resume Myth #3: References Available

I have to include “References Available Upon Request” on my resume, right?

Actually, no you don’t. That statement is really a given. These days, the employer assumes you’ll provide references upon request—and if they want them, they will request them. So do yourself a couple of favors:

1. Have your references ready. Use a reference sheet that is pretty standard and that you can give out to multiple employers as needed—usually provided at the end of the initial interview. Include each person’s name and phone number at the very least, and how you’re connected.

2. Prep your references. Make sure you not only request their permission to be a reference, but inform them of who may be contacting them and about the type of position you’re applying to. That way, they can already be thinking about all the nice, wonderful, supportive things they want to say about you.

Jessica Hernandez, President, CEO & Founder of Great Resumes Fast

Hi, I’m Jessica. I started this company back in 2008 after more than a decade directing hiring practices at Fortune 500 companies.

What started as a side hustle (before that was even a word!) helping friends of friends with their resumes has now grown into a company that serves hundreds of happy clients a year. But the personal touch? I’ve kept that.

You might have seen me featured as a resume expert in publications like Forbes, Fast Company, and Fortune. And in 2020, I was honored to be named as a LinkedIn Top Voice of the year!

I’m so glad you’re here, and I can’t wait to help you find your next perfect-fit position!
