How to Find Work You’ll Love
Guest Post By: Phil Bolton – Career Consultant – http://www.lessordinaryliving.com
If you’re on Great Resumes Fast, it’s almost certain you’re job hunting. As a career consultant, I’ve heard hundreds of reasons for a job search – redundancy, unhappiness, looking for the next challenge – what’s yours?
“There must be more to life”
I’m lucky to love my work. I help professionals to find work that they enjoy and find meaningful. It wasn’t always this way and I had my “there must be more to life moment” to get me here.
After graduation, I spent many years working as an accountant. On the outside everything was successful as I worked my way up the ladder. Inside I was mostly unsatisfied. My work was always very demanding and on my wedding anniversary in 2005, I found myself away from home again, working 14 hour days on a repetitive task that seemed to have no purpose. That night I drained a bottle of red wine and retired to bed, feeling a little emotional. I couldn’t sleep and when Sheryl Crow came on the radio at 1am, I admit that there were tears in my eyes. I had my “there must be more to life” moment. After drying my eyes, I realized that it was time for me to find work that I enjoyed that felt meaningful.
Getting help
The next morning I made a commitment to myself to find happiness in my work. Yet I didn’t know how to get started or what my choices were. Fortunately, a friend introduced me to a careers consultant and my life started to change. The consultant helped me to understand myself – my values, my skills, my strengths, what energized me.
Through this process, I identified that I had a skill and passion for helping others. I realized that it was important for me to do work that made a positive change in the lives of other people. I started to change my role in my company – managing teams, acting as a counsellor to others and work became much more fun. Ultimately, I realized that wasn’t enough and I wanted to spend all my time doing this work. My career consultant suggested I should develop new skills to allow a career switch, so I spent one year training as a career coach. I’ve never looked back and now I run my own career consultancy and have helped hundreds of professionals to find work they love.
How Career Consulting can help
As a career consultant, my role is to help people like you to find jobs that they love. I have two key ways of helping:
1) Finding what you love: I’ve developed a proven process to help you understand what kind of work you would really enjoy and create a clear vision and goal for how to make this happen
2) Finding the ideal role: I help you run a highly effective job search making sure that you use every possible avenue to secure the ideal opportunity
Career consulting works because two heads are always better than one. My role is to provide you with the motivation, confidence and accountability to make a difficult process seem easy. You get an expert in your corner to help you plan and execute a job search. The bonus is that rather than just taking the any job that comes along, career consulting helps you to take control and find work that you enjoy.
I know that I wouldn’t be where I am today without a great deal of support from my career consultant. If you’re interested in finding out more about career consulting, I offer an introductory conversation to hear about your reasons for job searching and to see if my services can help you find work you love.
